Giare Named Head of ֱ APL’s Air and Missile Defense Sector
Vishal Giare has been appointed head of the Air and Missile Defense Sector at the ֱ Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland.
In this role, Giare will lead APL’s efforts to advance the nation’s ability to defend our homeland, deployed forces, allies and partners against increasingly complex adversary threats.
“Vishal is a nationally recognized expert in air and missile defense, and his outstanding leadership will enable the Laboratory to continue to deliver game-changing impact to the nation,” said APL Director Dave Van Wie. “His vision, operational insights and leadership have significantly strengthened APL’s long-standing contributions to current high-priority national security missions and capabilities that will counter evolving threats.”
Giare has held a range of leadership positions during his 28 years at APL, most recently serving as the Laboratory’s mission area executive for Theater Defense. In this role, he oversaw development and delivery of critical technical capabilities for programs central to U.S. and allied defense, including Aegis, Air and Missile Defense Radar, multi-mission Standard Missile and the Cooperative Engagement Capability.
He also led pivotal APL technical contributions to advancing the Glide Phase Interceptor Hypersonic Defense program and the Guam Defense System.
Giare holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Tennessee and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and physics from the University of Michigan.
