In a show of how far DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program has come in its goal of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into combat scenarios — and increasing trust in this level of autonomy — the Secretary of the Air Force gamely strapped into the cockpit of an AI-piloted F-16 fighter jet and prepared for takeoff.

Each year, the ����ֱ�� Diversity Leadership Council announces its Diversity Recognition Awards, recognizing individuals and groups across all divisions of the university for their efforts to make their workplaces more inclusive. This year, four awards — two individual and two group — went to APL recipients.

By harnessing recent technological breakthroughs in physiological monitoring and machine learning, researchers at ����ֱ�� APL, in collaboration with psychiatrists at ����ֱ�� Medicine, have made significant strides toward creating objective digital measures for assessing and tracking mental health.

For the second year in a row, APL research analyst Susanne Wirwille directed a NATO Science and Technology Organization multi-domain space deterrence wargame. This year’s event was held in the Netherlands and brought together 37 participants from nine NATO nations to develop and test a comprehensive space deterrence framework.

The melting Arctic is creating new trade, economic and operational opportunities — but also new challenges that could threaten the U.S. border and the region’s fragile ecosystem. Researchers at ����ֱ�� APL are pooling their expertise and established experience in materials, modeling, AI and sensing to develop the technology and knowledge for a sustainable and lasting foothold in this rapidly changing region.

An innovative new capability being developed by APL that combines the abilities of human medics with virtual and robotic assistants has been recognized with an honorable mention in the Rapid Response category of Fast Company’s 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards.

Additive manufacturing has significant potential to strengthen the United States’ manufacturing base, but flaws within additively manufactured parts are preventing widespread adoption. ����ֱ�� APL experts are addressing this issue by developing sensors capable of identifying and preventing these flaws before they occur.

Two distinguished military leaders and strategists — Gen. (retired) David Berger and Adm. (retired) Charles “Chas” Richard — have joined the team of Senior Fellows at APL.

Staff members from APL brought more than just eclipse glasses when traveling to view the total solar eclipse on April 8. They packed their own miniature magnetometers as well.
